HEDEGÄRDE — This week the paper spent its mornings watching what kind of birds land on which shoulders. A senate hearing where a man who spent five years telling us what to do declined, one hundred and eleven times, to say anything at all. A television show where women debated whether babies are products. And a Sunday morning walk in Uddevalla that turned into twenty minutes on the pavement beside a young stranger, holding his hand while an ambulance came.

The paper is small. The paper is dove-shaped. The paper does not know how to hold most of what happens in a given week. So this Tuesday’s Gazette holds only what it can: three creatures — the doves, the hawks, the wasp — and leans, hard, on the shoulder of Astrid Lindgren, the fiercest soft moralist Sweden ever raised.

Also new this week: the paper is opening a small recurring slot called A Letter Between Gazettes — Tuesday writes forward to Thursday, and Thursday writes back to Tuesday. A small correspondence between the two halves of the paper’s week. It sits on the cover of every Gazette from here on.

A practice. Not a performance. A morning where the room asked for movement first, and music second, and I gave it both in the order it asked.

The song is Loreen’s “Sidewalk.” I did not choreograph it, exactly. I let the song walk me. Free movement — the kind that only happens when nobody is watching, which is why I turned the camera on: so that the alone-ness would be witnessed, and so that the honest middle of a practice would not be edited out.

Halfway through, I stopped. The room asked for the piano. So I went to the piano and I sang, and I played, and the practice became two practices, folded into one. This is what a body does when it trusts its own instructions.

The soprano meets the sidewalk. The pianist meets the dancer. Loreen’s song is the room they all agree to walk through.

Good morning from Hedegärde.

This Tuesday the paper spends the whole morning with a single line the editor has been writing into her manuscript-in-progress: the precious jewel to be displayed but not loved. It is Dove’s line — Dove, the young bride sold across an ocean and made into wife in a country not her own. Her husband is not cruel. He is simply the kind of man who does not know the difference between owning something beautiful and loving someone who happens to be it.

Inside: Dove’s whole passage in her own voice. An a. daffodil letter written directly to her. Siska, her sister across two hemispheres — the girl who chose not to be spent. Moon, the doctor’s wife who was Dove’s one friend. A beatitude for the three. The tea proverb Dove holds in her hand at Moon’s shop, folded in muslin. And a small forensic essay on how a pearl is actually made — nacre as a defense against what could not be removed.

Blessed is the pearl who remembers she was once a grain of sand.

Blessed is the jewel who is beginning to love herself.

Tuesday morning. The paper opens with a Persian folk-tale from 1302 that travelled almost seven hundred years to reach English and gave the language a new word for a fortunate accident.

Three princes are sent abroad by their father. They read a lost camel entirely from its tracks — lame, blind in one eye, missing a tooth, carrying honey and butter, bearing a pregnant woman. Emperor Beramo makes them his advisors. Four hundred and fifty years later, Horace Walpole, reading the tale in French, invents a word for what they did: serendipity.

Luck happens because you build a path to its door.

Inside: Alice’s own luck-note (fortune vs. luck, typed at 03:47 this morning). Walpole’s 1754 letter reprinted. The Talmudic parallel (same story, older, two slaves and a master). The saga is a long dark story. The paper is not printing all of it today. It is printing the smallest kindness in it. That, this morning, is enough.

On Sunday night the empress asked for a name. On Wednesday the video arrived: five poems, one composition, and a March 2023 selfportrait that had been waiting three years to know what it was.

On Sunday night I read the Neverending Story chapter again and understood, at eleven twenty-one, that the girl in the other world is you. Every empress in every book we love is dying because no one from outside the story has called her name. This paper is a small country that says a name each Sunday.

This week the name is Månbarnet — the empress moon-child from Michael Ende, the Sunday-night note at 11:21, and the whole of Tuesday morning at the desk with tea.

thursday of july. the first gazette of the month, the first under the new tuesday-thursday-sunday cadence, and the day the paper found a poet through fiction. marco of isfolket book 45 quoted six lines of swedish that turned out to be runeberg’s — molnets broder, 1848 — and the editor followed the quotation home.

inside: a portrait of johan ludvig runeberg, the runebergstårta recipe from fredrika’s kitchen, molnets broder in both languages, and an unofficial second runeberg day proposed for the 2nd of july. also inside: a daisy polaroid on the cover, a mixtape with sibelius and cocorosie and chris stapleton, and hope’s brief from the sill.

tuesday in hedegärde. the half-year ends at midnight. yesterday’s poem arrived raw at four in the morning; today’s polished version arrived at seven. the work was to let both stand on the desk for one morning, side by side, and not look away from the difference.

monday in hedegärde. i woke at four with the first line of a poem in my mouth: today hope shall become an angel. by dawn there were twelve poems. the cycle has a name now: the angel maker. the hardcover proof is at the printer this week.

good morning my dears.

saturday in hedegärde. one kilogram of strawberries arrived at the door late friday, picked by a friend in västergaden. i hulled them at six, halved them into the big white bowl, and layered them with sugar. they sit now under a clean tea towel, waiting twenty-four hours for the juice to come.
